The Military Merit Cross and was created on February 27, 1864, by King Wilhelm I of Prussia in three grades. It had its origins in the military Honor medal created by King Friedrich Wilhelm II in 1793.

The first awards were made in 1866 to 16 non-commissioned officers and enlisted men who were involved during the war against Austria.

During the 1st World War, 1770 Military Merit Crosses and 917 Military Honor Cross 1st class were awarded.
