Description

Prussian Iron Cross 1st class, 1914 issue, manufactured by Sy & Wagner, Berlin. Strike mark "S W" on the outside of the pin. Pin system intact. The cross in good, worn condition with corresponding silver patina. In the somewhat worn original case with dark red paper cover. The white silk on the inside of the lid undamaged. The inlay for the award covered with purple velvet. Comes with the original outer box with the broken red (paper) seal of the General Order Commission. Without tears or missing parts. A complete group that belongs together in all parts.

King Frederick William III of Prussia initially created the Iron Cross as a military decoration on March 17, 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars. The Iron Cross was also awarded during the Franco-Prussian War (1870), World War I (1914), and World War II (1939).

The Iron Cross was usually a military decoration only but awarded to civilians for performing military functions in a few instances.
