Description

Adolf Hitler created the German Eagle Order on May 1, 1937, based on a personal request of Foreign Minister Dr. Meissner. The creation of the order finally enabled the German Reich to honor foreigners. The order would be awarded through the "Führer" through proposal of the foreign minister.

On 27 December 1943 the Order was reorganized into nine classes, among them know the special Grand Cross of the Order of the German Eagle in Gold (Goldenes Grosskreuz des Deutschen Adlerordens).

Among just a few recipients Dr.Wilhelm Frick received the Golden Grand Cross after becoming Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia in 1943.

The here offered cassette and document folder came form the estate of Dr. Wilhelm Frick. The whole set of made from red leather and has golden highlights including the national eagle on the actual document folder. The folder itself is marked by “PRANTL MÜNCHEN”. Prantl was the “Hofdruckerei und Galanteriewarenmanufaktur Prantl” and supplied only the wealthiest clientele in Europe since 1797.

A document folder and parchment document without the cassette is today on display at the Mannerheim Museum in Helsinki, Finland. While the design for the forgein recipients was rather elaborate, Reichsdeutsche (Reichs German) receipients received a more plain designed version of the folder.

Wilhelm Frick (March 12, 1877 – October 16, 1946) was a prominent German politician of the Nazi Party (NSDAP) who served as Minister of the Interior in Adolf Hitler's cabinet from 1933 to 1943 and as the last governor of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

Historical information

Adolf Hitler created the German Eagle Order on May 1, 1937, based on a personal request of Foreign Minister Dr. Meissner1). The creation of the order finally enabled the German Reich to honor foreigners. The order would be awarded through the Fuehrer through proposal of the foreign minister. ("Reichsgesetzblatt" 1937)

The order consisted initially of 5 grades, Grand Cross, Merit Cross with Star, Merit Cross 1st, 2nd and 3rd Grade as well as a Merit Medal.

A unique Grand Cross of the Order of the German Eagle in Gold with Diamonds (Grosskreuz des Deutschen Adlerordens in Gold und Brillanten) was awarded to Benito Mussolini on 25 September 1937.

The Order was reorganized into nine classes on December 27, 1943, by adding the Grand Cross in Gold, the 1st class, and splitting the merit medal into a silver and bronze one. The classes of the actual order themselves got aligned within the new sequential structure from 1st to 5th, with the 5th being the old 3rd class.
