Description

A Navy Tally. Shortened. Also a memorial ribbon with machine embroidered Iron Cross.

"The Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, also known as "Emperor William the Great," was a German transatlantic ocean liner that served from 1897 until she was scuttled in battle in 1914. At one point, she was the largest ship in the world and held the prestigious Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing until the RMS Lusitania, operated by Cunard Line, entered service in 1907. Despite undergoing a refit in 1913, her career was relatively uneventful.

Built in Stettin for Norddeutscher Lloyd, the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was launched in 1897 and was notable for being the first ocean liner with four funnels, earning the title of the first "super liner." As the lead vessel in a series of four sister ships, which included Kronprinz Wilhelm, Kaiser Wilhelm II, and Kronprinzessin Cecilie, she marked a significant shift in maritime supremacy in early 20th-century Europe.

The liner ushered in a new era of ocean travel, with its four funnels quickly becoming a symbol of size, strength, speed, and luxury. On the Atlantic route, she won the Blue Riband for Germany, a prestigious accolade previously held by British ships.

In 1900, the ship sustained damage during a devastating multi-ship fire in New York's port. It also collided with another vessel in Cherbourg in 1906. As her sister ships entered service, the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was converted to an all-third-class liner to cater to the lucrative immigrant market traveling to the United States.

When World War I began, she was repurposed as an auxiliary cruiser with orders to capture and destroy enemy ships. She succeeded in sinking several vessels before being defeated by the British cruiser HMS Highflyer in the Battle of Río de Oro. Shortly afterward, her crew scuttled her. The wreck of the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was discovered in 1952 and was partially dismantled." based on wikepedia
