After Nazi Germany divided Czechoslovakia in 1939, Slovakia was left with a modest air force mainly consisting of Czechoslovak combat aircraft. This force defended Slovakia against Hungary in 1939 and supported Germany in the invasion of Poland. During World War II, the Slovak Air Force was tasked with defending Slovak airspace and, following the invasion of the Soviet Union, provided air support for Slovak troops fighting on the Eastern Front. As the conflict progressed, Slovakia's outdated biplanes were replaced with German aircraft, including the Messerschmitt Bf 109. However, after experiencing combat fatigue and desertion, the air force's effectiveness waned, leading to their return to Slovakia. From late August 1944, Slovak air units participated in the Slovak National Uprising against Germany.
